Meeting NHS targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will be “extremely challenging” without greater reuse and recycling, a report by the University of Exeter’s Business School has warned.
It said the NHS, which has an annual budget of £176bn, had pledged to become the world’s first net-zero national health service by 2040, with an 80% reduction by 2032.
The report Accelerating the Transition Towards a Net Zero NHS said the current take-make-dispose health system involved large volumes of waste, including single-use products and premature disposal of medical equipment, both of which created unnecessary carbon emissions and wasted money. . .
